Sir Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577 – 1640 ) painted Daniel in the Lions’ Den around 1614/1616. This thing is huge. Officially it’s 105 1/2 x 147 1/2 inches. Did I mention this thing is huge?
When I stand in front of it, I can feel just how much danger exists but for God’s answer to prayer.
In 1618 he exchanged a number of paintings, including Daniel in the Lions’ Den, for Sir Dudley Carleton’s collection of ancient marble sculpture.
Besides being a prolific painter Rubens was into politics and served as an adviser to some highly placed people. He was even knighted by both Philip IV and Charles I.
