I got to visit the Kimbell Art Museum today. The Age of Picasso and Matisse: Modern Masters from the Art Institute of Chicago is currently on view (and will be until February 2014.)
For modern art fans in the DFW area, this is an opportunity to see some key pieces on loan from the Art Institute of Chicago. From browsing the AIC’s online collection page, this is looks like a cherry picked selection of the modern art floor. While this is a great start to what the AIC has to offer, if your exposure to the museum’s collection is limited to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, then it will need to remain on your list of must-see museums.
The one sentence summary of this exhibition is: “These artists had command of color.” From Picasso’s blue palette in The Old Guitarist to Dalí’s explosive 3D effect in A Chemist Lifting, it is a treat to allow the artists to lead your reactions by color and texture rather than the subject of the piece.
I’m going to head back over there when the new Piano Pavilion is open, but it will be more about taking a second trip through this exhibit.
For more details on the exhibit, check out the Kimbell’s site.
